In Vitro Activities of Tosufloxacin Against Aerobic Gram-negative Bacilli

Abstract
Tosufloxacin, one of the fluoroquinolones with broad-spectrum activity, became available lately.
Gradual increase of fluoroquinolone resistance has been reported in some species of bacteria with the increased use of the drug, but the in vitro activity of tosufloxacin against our clinical isolates has not been evaluated. In this study, the activity against aerobic gram-negative bacilli were tested by the agar dilution method. Mic_(90S) of tosufloxacin were ¡ÂI §¶/ml against Klebsiella oxyloca, Enterobacter aerogenes, Proteus vulgaris, Morganella morganii, Salmonella, Shigella flexneri and Yersinia enterocolitica, less than 16 §¶/ml against Citrobacter freundii, K. pneumoniae, E. cloacae, P. mirabilis, Providencia spp. and Xanthomonas maliophilia, and over 16§¶/ml against Escherichia coli, Serratia marcescens, Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Resistance rates to tosufloxacin, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin were similar except for Providencia spp. and X. maltophilia, which were lower to tosulfloxacin. Tosulfloxacin may be as useful as ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin especially for the treatment of enteric bacterial infections.
